Reading with Rachel: A 10-month, on-line Reading Celebration!
This course is for anyone who wants to listen to Rachel talk about 10 books, and for anyone who wants to read, write and/or talk about books in a supportive and open community. No specific previous writing or reading experience is necessary. All of your previous reading and writing experiences are valued.

Salons meet (on zoom) on the first Sunday of each month from 2pm-4:30pm (ET) on the following days: Oct 6, Nov 3, Dec 1, Jan 5, Feb 2, March 2, April 6, May 4, June 1, July 13* (please note this is the second Sunday of July)

2-3pm for listeners and makers: Rachel introduces the book, provides a teaching, and whenever possible the author will visit the class. (All listener sessions will be recorded and made available to registered listeners or makers who missed the live-virtual event for 10 days following recording.)

3-4:30pm ET for makers only: Small and full group conversation about the book of the month and writing/making/talking prompts from Rachel. All maker sessions include two emails from Rachel (one a week before, one the week after the session) with a list of related/recommended readings as well as thinking and making prompts.

Playtime/Sharetime: Anyone who signs up for a maker session is invited to Rachel's reading/writing/making/sharing playtime. These sessions will be 60-90 minutes, on Fridays, late morning or early afternoon, Eastern Time. You are welcome to share work related to RwR but are also welcome to join if you don't have work to share!

Books will include: Helen DeWitt’s The English Understand Wool (Oct), Eileen Myles’s For Now (Dec), Anne Boyer’s Garments Against Women (March)Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely (April)Maggie Nelson’s Jane, Jen Bervin's Silk Poems, NourbeSe Philip’s She Tries Her Tongue, Maira Kalman’s Still Life With Remorse and a few others. (Helen DeWitt is not able to join us but so far the other scheduled authors are!)

Cost: There are several engagement options. Hopefully one of these will work for you! If not, let me know.

Listening only: $60/session or $400 for all 10 listener-only sessions (paid in advance) 

Listening & Making: $80/session or $600* for all 10 maker sessions (paid in advance)

*$500 or pay what you wish for those Reading with Rachel repeat participants

  • No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please reach out via email if you’d like to join but can’t pay all or any of the suggested price. Rachel Zucker is the author of twelve books of poetry and prose including The Poetics of Wrongness, SoundMachine and MOTHERs, and founder and host of the podcast Commonplace. In addition to working as a labor doula, childbirth educator, and pearl stringer, Rachel has taught writing for more than twenty-five years. She's taught people of all ages at the 92nd Street Y, Friends Seminary (K-4), Basic Trust Day Care, Antioch Low Residence Program, Yale, Columbia and, for the past thirteen years, graduate and undergraduates at New York University. She is founder and directrix of The Commonplace School for Embodied Poetics.
